In the beginning

Tuck’s letter to selected friends, October 26, 1988:

I suggest we form “The Reading Group.”

Why?

  1. Perhaps at last we have the experience and maturity to match our once-youthful ideals.
  2. To forestall premature brain death.
  3. To counter the circumstances that threaten to isolate us from each other.
  4. To create a friendly forum that fosters a rejuvenated sense of common purpose.

How? By inviting our mutual friends to meet on the second Monday of each month at our homes on a rotating basis to read and discuss works on national, international and scientific subjects, by encouraging members to write and share their observations, and occasionally by yielding the forum to authors or thinkers from afar.

I suggest we first meet Monday, January 9, 1989, 7:30-9 pm, at the home of Mary & John, and that we first read Perestroika by Gorbachev, Harper & Row, 1987.
