Vern Faatz recommends “Breaking Chains”

Breaking Chains, by R. Gregory Nokes, the tale of a slave family brought to Oregon with a promise that once they help their “owner” settle and develop his land, they will be freed. Not so, as it turns out, but the family goes to court and wins.  In addition Nokes gives the reader a wealth of incidental facts about the early days in the founding of the state. and its approach to the issue of slavery.
